Backup FAQs

What can Backup run?

Basically, whatever you can plug into a standard wall outlet, Backup can do.

Because it operates off a reserve of energy, the next question is "how long can it run for?" Check out the "What Can It Power?" section for both simultaneous runtimes (ie powering multiple things at once) as well as single charge calculations on common devices. This includes a mix of things that require continuous power (ie your fridge) or items that need to be recharged (ie your phone).

What is the product life of Backup?

All components are designed with at least a 10 year life in mind. The battery cells are rated to over 4,000 cycles with >80% of initial capacity, which is over 10 years of daily full charge and discharge cycling -- that means fully draining your Backup every single day for 10 years! Typical usage cycle will be much less often but we made sure it was durable to withstand daily use for a decade or more.

How many Extends can I combine with a Core unit?

You can pair up to [6] Extends with a Core unit for 10.5 KWh of localized energy storage.

How do I plug stuff in if it's on top of the fridge or behind something out of sight?

The included Power Strip! Every Backup comes with a power strip extension cord that creates easy access to instant power. The power strip comes with [3] AC Outlets (ie wall outlets) [2] USB-C and [2] USB-A ports, giving you plenty of ways to connect your everyday devices and appliances beyond the fridge.

When the power comes back how long does it take to recharge an empty Backup?

Approximately 2.5 hours and Backup will start recharging automatically, no action on your part required.

If I'm a renter, can I take this with me when I move?

Yes! Install is easier than a flat screen TV and you take that with you.

Can Backup run my AC? My Heating?

You can, but we don't recommend it as the primary use case for Backup.

Heating and cooling are incredibly energy intensive especially when you're looking to heat/cool large open spaces. A standard AC unit might run on full blast at 1500W which means it could use up a Backup Complete system in as little as 2 hours. That same energy reserve could power a fridge for 60 hours + lighting + microwave + phone charging - really makes you think about your energy budget, doesn't it?

That said, we completely understand that heating and cooling are concerns during an outage especially when those outages are caused by extreme weather. For those looking to have some level of support with Backup, we recommend the following:

1) Run your AC intermitently and on lowest setting to conserve Backup energy.
2) Use a fan instead to circulate air and help with cooling
3) Use a localized space heater or electric blanket for warmth

Install behind my fridge? Doesn't it get hot back there?

Yup, and we planned for that. Backup is designed with both dust and heat in mind and safe to use behind the fridge even with any exhaust heat that comes off your appliance. Backup is rated for safe use up to 129°F and our Cool Tech Enclosure makes the entire back panel of the unit a working heat sink, meaning it draws heat away from the electronics inside the system. Internal fans also help keep the system cool. So yeah, even if your fridge is built into a cubby-hole and it gets warm behind your unit, Backup is made to operate just fine in that kind of condition.

How does this not require an electrician?

Backup connects to the grid supply through a standard wall outlet. No access panel or circuit breaker, no electrician, no problem. No rewiring to your home which makes it a great low-impact solution for owners and renters alike.

What if I want to power multiple rooms?

Backup is a modular, room-based system. You can install a 1.5 KWh core unit, 3 KWh complete kit, or larger configuration in any room that you want to backup. You can control and monitor multiple installations easily through a single gateway on the mobile app.

How does this work with solar?

The same Connection point that allows additional battery units to be connected can be used to connect solar panels. We've implemented a high performance MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) algorithm to harness optimal solar energy. We offer folding solar panels that can be scaled in 400W increments to fit your application. Each 400W array can be easily stored when not in use and deployed by hand by one person, no installation or contractor required.

Why would I want this over a portable power station?

Portable power stations can be great - BioLite even makes them, too!

Where Backup really stands apart from portable power stations is our form factor and our ability to disappear into any room and provide instant, automatic power. When you rely on a power station during an outage you have to take it out storage, hope that it's full, plug in your essentials, and then hope you don't stub your toe walking into this new giant box sitting in your room. If you're looking to keep your fridge going that means you need to pull it out from the wall every time the power goes out (and hope that you caught it early enough in the outage that nothing has spoiled).

Backup takes the modularity of a portable power station and turns it into an easily installed solution so you have an always-on safety net which is crucial for important devices that need continuous power to function like a fridge or CPAP machine. Unlike boxy power stations, Backup measures 2.8 inches thick (basically the width of an iPhone 15) and is designed to tuck behind your fridge or under a bed/desk/cabinet so that it can deliver in-room power without disrupting the flow of your space. And because it connects directly into an AC outlet, it'll always be full when you need it and it recharges itself automatically when the power comes back on. And the included Power Hub means you still have plenty of ports to plug in additional devices beyond the fridge.

Why would I want this over a whole home solution?

Have you ever gone to a generator or whole-home website? What's the first thing you see? "Get a Quote Today."

Not with Backup.

Don't get us wrong, whole home solutions are impressively powerful and offer a lot. But they are also expensive, time-consuming, require permits and a lot of research and negotiation. "Get a Quote" exists because navigating a straightforward price isn't available! And that can largely be due to the fluctuation of price of installation costs which can vary by region dramatically. A system's price might look within the ballpark on paper, but suddenly you're staring down several thousands of dollars extra in installation fees.

Backup offers upfront pricing and no installation fees - you install it yourself in under 30 minutes. Backup is for anyone who is looking to get into energy storage solutions but has been put off by the convoluted research process, aggressive upsells, and high price tags. Take your first step with a critical room in your home and you can expand over time if needed. Plus, unlike expensive contractor installs, we're renter friendly and you can take Backup with you to your next home.

Why would I want this over a portable gas generator?

Gas generators are heavy, LOUD, come with fumes (you can only use them outdoors), can be dangerous to operate, and there is the ongoing maintenance of making sure you have fuel to run the unit. And if you're storing fuel so you can use it in an emergency, you need to make sure it's stored safely and doesn't spoil. Plus, you only break out the generator after an outage is occured, meaning you have to be there to react in the moment. Did we mention they are loud? Loud for you, loud for your neighbors, loud for your kids - not exactly a stress-relieving experience.

Backup offers instant, automatic power to your most essential devices. You set it up once and that's it. When it kicks on everything stays quiet, there's no running around hauling heavy stuff, no need to move the fridge, just continue on with your day. No fumes, no fuss, just peace and quiet. And no need to buy gas, it refills directly from the wall when the power comes back on.
