Yes you must purchase or own a Backup Core in order to use Backup Extend.

How many Extends can I daisy-chain?

You can connect up to (6) Backup Extends to a Backup Core for a total of 10.5 KWh of battery capacity.

What if I don't want my Backup Extend to sit right next to my existing Backup Core?

You can purchase the 8' Backup Linker Extension Cable and locate your Core and Extend up to 8 feet apart from each other.
